I've never understood gift shops. How do they make money? Our local gift shop has no parking, is miles from the town centre, I've never seen a soul inside, and yet it still survives. Explain this to me like I'm five.

Er, if you run other, more profitable businesses, you can often use a underperforming business to write off against tax and all other sort of expenses.
Or register the business outside the UK.
The same way a well known chocolate manufacturer pays little or no UK tax after high interest loans from its overseas subsidiaries have been repayed.
No moral judgement here, just the way it is...
