Trouble in Hull (and Beverley) anger

Hull Daily Mail: Restaurant owner sick of punters running off without payment

Meanwhile, across town...

Hull Daily Mail: Gift shop faces huge rent rise

I've never understood gift shops. How do they make money? Our local gift shop has no parking, is miles from the town centre, I've never seen a soul inside, and yet it still survives. Explain this to me like I'm five.

Er, if you run other, more profitable businesses, you can often use a underperforming business to write off against tax and all other sort of expenses.

Or register the business outside the UK.

The same way a well known chocolate manufacturer pays little or no UK tax after high interest loans from its overseas subsidiaries have been repayed.

No moral judgement here, just the way it is...
