Well I'm more concerned about the line "“A tentative taste confirmed this was so". What?!? He discovers a mysterious black substance in his custard (sorry) and TASTES IT ANYWAY!!! Who does that?!?
i know he's an old chap and all, but I don't think national service is the cure for the lack of mouldy custard apologies in this so called "modern" era. Mind you, I'm not sure blaming poor availability of postal codes is a much better reason.
